ImPACT (Immediate Post Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) was created as a screening tool to assist sports medicine professionals in evaluating athletes after a suspected concussion. Medical professionals who most frequently evaluate and treat sports medicine injuries are osteopathic surgeons, pediatricians, family medicine practioners, although a broad range of specialist may also see the concussed athlete following their injury. In addition, certified athletic trainers often play a crucial role in evaluation and treatment of the concussed athlete and they are often involved in the baseline screening of the athlete.

ImPACT was not designed to take the place of regular medical care and should not be used without proper oversight. ImPACT should never be used as a standalone instrument to make return to play decisions and the test results should always be placed within the context of the overall medical care of the athlete.

It is also important to emphasize that ImPACT is not a substitute for neuropsychological testing, which can only be completed by an appropriately trained and licensed neuropsychologist. Neuropsychologist can play an important role in the evaluation of the athletes who have experienced the concussion but are not usually involved in the acute management of the athlete. Neuropsychological testing can be particularly useful in treating athletes who have prolonged or complicated recoveries, or who has had academic issue following injury.

The information provided by the ImPACT test report should be viewed as only one source of information regarding an individual’s level of neurocognitive functioning. Even though ImPACT is based on demonstrated scientific principles and research, external factors such as improper test administration or improper test-taking environment may result in inaccurate test results. These factors and others must be considered in making return to play decisions. The information provided by this report is of a general nature and does not represent medical advice, a diagnosis, or prescription for treatment. Additionally, diagnostic or return-to-play decisions should not be based solely on the data generated by this report, but on an in-person evaluation made by a professional trained in concussion management in accordance with the usual and standard medical practice. An individual suspected of suffering traumatic brain injury or concussion should immediately seek the advice of qualified and trained personnel for interpretation of test result and should be monitored closely for the emergence of symptoms. Stay Ahead of the Game, Inc. is not responsible for any decisions based on the information contained in the ImPACT test report. A test taker’s qualified and trained personnel have the sole responsibility for establishing diagnosis and suggesting appropriate treatment.
